The core studio art practice of Jeffrey Hewitt was painting, specifically with a focus on abstraction, color field and text as image. Hewitt drew influences from many artistic schools of thought, but perhaps some of the largest influences were the New York, Abstract-Expressionist movement, Neo-Dada and earlier European Expressionist works by artists such as Wassily Kandinsky. The artist often sourced imagery from his original photographs, and valued the connections between natural abstraction and perception. Many of Hewitt’s canvases are adorned with messages relating to the anxious atmosphere of post-9/11 America. The pace at which the artist produced this work, suggests a strong emotional connection to the process of painting as an intellectual pursuit.
